Stefan Nilsson takes us back to his days of the band Kornet and explores the material from what was called “jazz-rock.” In retrospect, the sound that mixed genres became a style all to itself, and here it still sounds fresh and vibrant.
The combo of Nilsson with Max Schultz-Eric Soderlind/g, Magnus Persson-Rafael Sida Huizar/perc, Parik Boman/b, Johan Hasslequist/dr and Aminah Al Fakir/voc mix jazz, baroque and a dash of rock on songs that range from originals to jazz standards to the 16th Century.
Nilsson’s own “Yttersti” and “Keltsong” have cheerful and optimistic moods with clean guitar work from Schultz and prancing piano and percussion. JS Bach’s “D-moll Concerto” has some clever keyboards and piano while “Menuet” mixes piano with cheerful drums. On the jazzier side of things. “Don’t get Around Much Anymore” includes an electric guitar groove as well as a go for baroque attitude and “Honeysuckle Rose” has bouncing brushes on the drums along with bass and guitar chiming along. A more insouciant collection will be hard to find.
