Here’s a rewarding three song ep by the team of Charlie Lockwood/oud, Joshua Thomson/as, Ted Camat/dr and gary Calhoun James/b. As with most things with oud, there is a Middle East lilt to the material, ranging from the funky back beat of “Bete Noir” to the easy gait of “Cynthia’s Tears.” Thomson’s alto sax is most useful on the dancing “Raq’s Laylah” which has a festive groove that makes you want to form a line and start kicking. Nice mix of mood and melody.
