Drummer Gerry Gibbs proves that the acorn doesn’t fall far from the tree. The son of bebopping drummer/vibist Terry Gibbs, the younger sticks with the drums and brings together a tasty all star team with Kenny Barron/p and Ron Carter/b along with guests Roy Hargrove/tp-fh and Cassandra Wilson/voc.
Where do you start with a team like that? Well, on their own, the trio is sublime and swinging on “Wives and Lovers” and “Surrey With The Fringe On Top.” Hargrove’s horn is delightfully warm on “On a Clear Day” and an ebullient “What Are You Doing The Rest Of Your Life.” There are two takes of “Watch What Happens,” and Wilson shows what a difference a dame makes, while she coos seductively on “The Look of Love” and teams with Hargrove on a surprisingly successful “Alfie.” These guys make this kind of music sound so easy, but if it were, why is it recorded so rarely. Grab this one and run!!!
