Michael Janisch: Paradigm Shift

This two disc set has Michael Janisch in an ambitious atmosphere. He plays electric and acoustic basses, percussion and a bunch of electronic effects as he mix and matches with Paul Booth/reeds, Jason  Palmer/tp, Leonardo Genovese/p-kley and Alex Bonney/elec. On some tunes, such as “Chacaraca” the band charges forward like a Blue Note infested Art Blakey’s Messengers. Jason Palmer’s trumpet sears on a Giant Steppish “Crash” and the band gets into some soul funk on the futuristic “Movement II-Celestial Dictator.” Besides the band  pieces, Janisch does some solo and duet creations such as with Paul Booth’s didgeridoo on the ominous “Fluid” and the melancholic “The JJ I Knew” with Alex Bonney’s electronics. Spacey sounds abound on the 3 Part “Movement III” with bass, electronics and horns vying for attention while lonely piano and synthesizes are delivered on “One-Eyed Calf.” Wide ranging, creative and thrilling!
