If you can’t ever make it to the annual New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival, the next best alternative is to get a recording like this. Here, you’ve got the Dukes of Dixieland revving up at the 2015 Fest. The team of Kevin Clark/tp/voc, David Phy/tb-voc, Ryan Burrage/cl-sax, Alan Broome/b-voc, David Mahoney/dr, Joe Kennedy/p-voc deliver the goods, getting you on your feet right away with the Crescent beat on “Mama Inez” and keeping it strong up to the closing”Whoop and Holler Blues.” A surprisingly healthy amount of Duke Ellington shows up, with a fantastically earthy “Koko” with wild reeds to Kennedy’s quote of “Do Nothing ‘Til You Hear From Me” before the band grooves through a medley of “Caravan/Angelica” and even get romping on “Stevedore Stomp.” A dash of Tom Waits is delivered with a vintage gravel throat on “I Wish I Was In New Orleans” and the band goes rockabilly with a KC twist on “Shakin/Chantilly Lace/Great Balls of Fire” featuring Burrage’s tenor. All that’s missing is a beignet from Café Du Monde for this one!
