Art “Turk” Burton and Congo Square: Spirits Then & Now

Art “Turk” Burton brings together two different bands in both studio and concert settings with the unifying factor being his resolute congas on this mix of jazz and Latin sounds. The first two tracks include a bopping read of “When Sonny Gets Blue” which includes a rich soprano solo by Vincent Carter and and a lot adventure by Douglass Ewart while the mix of searing reeds and percolating percussion on “Cuba: A Tribute to Chucho” is a volcanic eruption. Most clever is a mix of vocals and piano for an exciting version of John Coltran’s “Moment’s Notice” and even better is an Afro-Cubaned take with vocal chants on “A Love Supreme.” Taalib-Din Zuyad’s flute cruises over the percolating percussion on “Mr. Brown (Cold Sweat” whereas Ari Brown’s soprano glides through the rapid fire pellets on “Soul Naturals.” The combination of Latin rhythms and modal jazz is a fragrant mix here.
