Better known in Russia as Vladimir Sermakashev, Vlad West was the inspiration and consultant as for the movie Moscow on the Hudson, and is famed in his own country as one of its most important musicians. On this recent release, the 13 concise tunes are all written arranged and performed by the multi-instrumentalist in a trio format of piano, bass and drums. The drums are recorded way up front, and hit pretty aggressively, so there is an in your face aggressiveness on the funky “Ring for Swing,” “OG” and “If Clouds Will Disappear” that mixes rock beats with jazz. His piano playing feels Monk-inspired, with a bouncy “Green Light” and even a dash of “Round Midnight” on “Up To You,” while a hint of “The Man I Love” introduces “Gypsy Doll.” His classical touch is displayed on “Someone is Waiting For You” while his funky work on bass is exemplified on ”No Hard Feelings.” The melodies and grooves are enjoyable, although a change in dynamics and lessening the load on the drum sticks would have improved things considerably.
