The name “Panayides” comes the Greek meaning “pure” and “awesome.” Give me a word, ANY WORD!
Guitarist Matt Panayides teams up with Rich Perry/ts, Thomson Kneeland/b and Mark Ferber/dr for a swinging session of pure and awesome jazz that swings and spins like a lamb on the spit. He’s got a nice clean tone, using the chords well on the Wes Montgomery inspired “Shades of Greens” that bops with delight. His soft touch on “Hen’s Tune” and easy stride during “Gravity and Walt” show gentle hands, while his teaming up to canter with Perry’s tenor on “Of The Winter Light” and the bluesy “The Past is Obturate” make for some great interplay. The rhythm team sizzles like a gyro on the grill during “Awaken” and can create a thick mix like Zedziki sauce as they chug along on “Watcher.” Gotta love these guys. Opa!
