Mark Christian Miller: Crazy Moon

Vocalist Mark Christian Miller does an excellent job in picking both a collection of standards and obscurities as well as a working team for his medium tenor voice. His tone has a dash of Barry Manilow in it, earnest with clarity. The band of Angelenos is first rate in Josh Nelson/p-arr, Dave Robaire/b, Sammy Miller/dr, Larry Koonse/g, Ron Stout/tp, Billy Hulting/perc and Bob Sheppard/bcl. Miller shows his bop bonafides as he bounces well with Nelson on the pretty “April Fooled Me” and is as sharp  as a shark skin suite on “Almost In Your Arms.” Stout and Sheppard deliver ominous shades as Miller brings  bluesy read of “Strange” after going soft and sensitive on “Second Chance” and striding an easy gait with Koonse” on “Oh, You Crazy Moon.” He knows how to make a fitting mood, as he teams with Miller’s brushes on the wistful “Twilight World” and works the buccinators with “Cheek to Cheek.” Next door neighbor friendliness delivered to your ears.
