Bassist Jon Burr leads an impressive post bop quintet here with Tim Ouimette/tp, Steven Freider/ts, Mike Eckroth/p and Jerome Jennings/dr. Their specialty seems to be taking jazz standards and tweaking them a bit; thus you get a slightly prismatic “All The Things You Ate” and a piano bluesy “Savoy Fare” that stomps along quite well. Ouimette provides a hip trumpet on “Always Let Me Go” and the leader supplies an easy gait on ”Out Of This World.”The front line bounces well on boppers like “Cherry Keys” and can boogaloo on ‘Soul Cry” while they deliver a languid take of Stevie Wonder’s “Don’t You Worry About A Thing.” The rhythm team snaps well on “Break out the Blues” and drives with Freider’s heavy hitting tenor on “Fried Blues.” Impressive.
