Guess how many players make up the East West Quintet. That’s right…SIX! You get Dylan Heaney/as-ts, Phil Rodriguez/tp, Simon Kafka/g, Mike Cassedy/p-key, Benjamin Campbell/b and Jordan Perlson/dr teaming up for some vintage post bop material. Chiming piano and cantering rhythms set the tone for Rodriguez’s horn on “Draft” whiel the unison horns form a tight front line on the charging and dramatic “Next.” Gentle pastoral moods are crated by Kafka and Rodriguez on the charming “Interstellar” while the team gets dramatic on “Something.” Hard rock guitar and guitar effects dominate “Action Figure” and “Experiment No. 3” respectively, with the former cleverly changing gears into a wonderful dance. Lots of intriguing ideas meld well with accessible grooves here.
