Drifter: Flow

Finnish pianist Alexi Tuomarila teams up with a lithe post-bop team of Nicolas Kummert/ts-voc, Alex Gilain/b-voc and Teun Verbruggen/dr for some flowing small group impressions. Tuomarila has a melodic tone and touch, creating a graceful cadence with Gilain’s bass as Kummert’s warm tenor floats on “Crow Hill” and the reflective and dreamy “The Elegist.” Kummert’s tenor goes a bit opaque while the bass gets chocolaty rich on “Lighthouse” while the two create pensive moments on “Touei.” Tuomarila gently drives the team on a forward leaning read of Sting’s “King of Pain” and some vocals even get into the act during the bopping “Nothing Ever Lasts.” Water lilies of impressionism float well here.
