Arrigo Cappellitti/Furio Di Castri/Bruce Ditmas: Homage To Paul Bley

The title of this album by Arrigo Cappelletti/p, Furio Di Castri/b and Bruce Ditmas/dr is going to throw you off. While the title signifies a verbal salute to the famed Paul Bley, what comes across musically is a tip of the hat to Thelonious Monk. Yes, the title track has characteristic clarity and deft of touch that feels right with the famed pianist. But “Breaks” is filled with Monkish playfulness, and “Monk’s Fantasy” brims over with Spherical gentle fragrances. And how are you going to get around “Pannonica & Crepiscule with Nellie” as Cappelletti goes full force with ten fingers of delight? Kinetic bop on “Bluesy” and lyrical radiance on “Ashes” allow the trio to glow in a bopping atmosphere that is irresistible. A playful “Changes” is a plum of a piece and bass and piano have a wonderful time on the dance floor with “Lyric Tango.” No matter who the inspiration is here, it’s an inspiring collection!
