Paquito D’Rivera mixes the warmth of tropical jazz with the romanticism of classical music as he brings his sax and clarinet in conjunction with the strings of Eduardo Coma’v, Gonzalez/v, Raymond Arteaga/va, Luis Caballero/ce and Oscar Rodriguez/b. D’Rivera’s clarinet is warm and rich as he melds with the strings which bow and pluck on the sensuous “ALborada Y Son” while they all dance together in a joyul “Wapango.” Things get more moody and atmospheric on “Afro” as the strings take you to various side streets and D’Rivera takes you to a smoky café with his sax on “Martica.” His stick longs and sighs during Introduccion Y Guajira” while his alto breathes out a smoky Cubano on “Notas De La Habana.” A rich mix of dance and romance works perfectly here.
