For some strange reason, Ahmad Jamal is one and only post bop pianist who has his own unique and immediately identifiable sound, yet has never been a major inspiration for the present generation of artists. His last few albums have been superb, and this concert setting with long time mates Herlin Riley/dr, Reginald Veal/b and Manolo Badrena/perc, solidifies all of his qualities and attractions. He’s a master of the subtle groove, and delivers wonderful reads of his recent releases in “Blue Moon” and “Autumn” where his piano becomes part of the rhythm team. He likewise digs into a rivulet on “Sunday Afternoon” and lets it ride out for 12 minutes, while the more concise pieces such as “The Shout” and “The Gypsy” are gorgeous digital delicacies. His band is able to create wonderful waves that ebb and flow, with Jamal riding like a long boarder in Hawaii. He hangs ten here.
