The five piece band The Expanders is comprised of John Asher/drperc-voc, John Burcher/voc-g-perc, Chiquis Lozoya/voc-b, Roy Fishell/org and Devin Morrison/voc-g-perc deliver what we might call “old school” reggae. Earthy and without embellishments, the quintet sounds like vintage Jimmy Cliff, Desmond Dekkar and Jimmy Cliff through their holistic mix of chugging rhythms and easy s waing percussion on tunes like the title track and “Piece of Love.” Rishell’s Hammond B3 oozes out groans of joy on the swaying “Uptown Set” and bluesy “People Business” charging on the hevily grooved “The Horse.” The vocals are soe times in chorus and luxuriously lazy as on “Thanks For Life” and the the cheerfully chugging “Top Shelf.” The lyrics are upbeat and usually life affirming and as for the tempo, as they use to say, “Reggae got soul.”
