Drummer Devin Gray leads a quartet with Chris Speed/ts-cl, Kris Davis/p and Chris Tordini/b and call themselves RelativE ResonancE. They collectively seem to desire to emphasize tricky and kinetic quirkiness over melodious song form, as ectomorphic piano and drum lines ricochet on “City Nothing City” and the rhythm team forms a hectic undercurrent under Speed’s clarinet on “In The Cut.” His tenor groans while Tordini drones while Gray scurries on “Undo the Redo” and he sounds fuzzy along Davis’ eerie piano and Dray’s ricocheting sticks on “Jungle Design.” Technically impressive, but a bit more “alma” would have made it more attractive.
