Alune Wade & Harold Lopez-Nussa: Havana  Paris Dakar

Here’s a fun disc that takes you on a plane ride to parts of Europe, Africa and Cuba, sometimes presenting them in toto, and other times as a nice spicy sauce. At times as on “Aminata” and “Dom” you get vocal choirs that give hints of Ladysmith Black Mambazo, and it can be delivered in a salsa rhythm or a cappella. Sinewy African guitars lilt as they mix with Cuban rhythms on “Guajira” and “Independence Cha Cha,” a tune which is also able to include a vocal chorus in the mix. Trumpet and percussion create a Buena Vista Club folk sensuality on “Yarahya” and “Seydou” and even some English lyrics get thrown in as salsa mixes with the Sahel on “Salimata.” This is a treat, no matter where you’re from or where your musical allegiance lays.
