Actis Dato Quartet: Earth is the Place

Italian reed master Carlo Actis Dato does a playful answer to Sun Ra’s Space is the Place here with Beppe Di Filippo/as-ss, Matteo Ravizza/b and Daniele Bertone/dr-perc on a collection of originals. The pieces are free in spirit, but they never stray too far from infectious meediterranean lyricism. Dato’s baritone and Di Filippo’s also joyfully swing and tango on “Immigrati” while Easten European Klezmer festivieties get you to dance as alto and tenor kick their heels with Ravizza’s bass on “Correva L’anno” and “Gipsy Cembalon.” Some Afro-Cuban earthiness teams with hand clapping and Caribbean rhythms as bari and soprano jump into the streets on “Sole Crescente” and touches of Mahler veers around as Ravizza bows his bass and Di Filippo tells a haunting story on “Kerala.” Exotic Balkan folk energies get you dancing the two step as Bertone snaps out a frenetic groove on “Nomade” and the team closes on a frisky note as the reeds go flying on “Shadows.” Bella!
