Stray Cats: Live at Rockpalast

It might be hard to believe these days, but at one time there was a revival of swinging jazz, and The Straay Cats (Brian Setzer/g, Lee Rocker/b and Slim Jim Phantom/dr) were on the head of the Nike missle. Two concerts are on this dvd, and they show what can be done to make jazz once again p opular. A 1981 gig in Cologne has the band rollicking on Cat originals “Rock This Town” and “Stray Cat Strut” whyile a take of Dorsey Burnette’s “My One Desire” is a sweat filled delight. Move up two years, and the rockabilly band adds saxist Mel Collins for material ranging from George Jones’ “The Race Is On” to the Buddy Holl-inspired “Oh Boy.” The whole m ood can be summarized in their renewed tribute to Burnette with the tune “Tear It Up.” Pop music was, for a time, fun, arty and swinging once again. Where did we make the wrong turn?
