Trumpeter and vocalist Pete Rodriguez does what every father dreams of his son; he takes over the business. Son of the famed crooner Pete “El Conde” Rodriguez, “young” Pete returns to songs made famous by his father and brings classic sounds and moods to parched modern ears.
The team of Luis Perdomo/key-p, Ricky Rodriguez/b, Rudy Royston/dr and Robert Quintero/perc is simpatico like leather gloves as they support the leaders sensitive and warm vocals on the lonely “Soy La Ley” and the passionate “Sombras Que Paso.” dsPerdomo’s piano is playful as the trumpet glides on “Stolen Changes” and is spacious along with a lonely bass on the lovely “Ten Fe.” Some sophisticated swing glides well on “Gravity” and ripples of waves are supplied by rhythm team for fluffy trumpet sounds on “Gravity.” The closing “El Conde Negro” includes shifting moods like a free associative dream as the horn careens over the assertive percussion and drums. A well conceived piece that is sure to make the father look down from heaven and smile.
