Pianist/composer Enoch Smith Jr serves up an impressive mix of hip mainstream jazz and urban R&B here with a core team of Sangmin Lee/dr, Noah Jackson/b and vocalists Sarah Elizabeth Charles, Nate Anderson, renee Anderson and Dee-1. Straightahead and sleek acoustic jazz trio sounds snap and sizzle on “One Thing” yet dashes of hip hop keep it 21st Century. The team sounds 50s hip on “One of Us” just before Charles brings up intriguing lyrics about her questions on God, while the concise “Misfits Theme” and “Sweepin” mix acapella voice and rap styled lyrics. A gorgeously genteeled ballad is soft and velvety on “You Got Me (Sometimes)” which contrast with the indie sounding “Everything’s Allright.” A brilliantly modern soulful read of “Yesterday” features Charles’ voice in glorious form, making this a combination of long time past, short time past and present. Good mix!
