AN ANSWER TO BLASPHEMY…Vince Guaraldi Trio: Peanut’s Greatest Hits

I just saw the preview for the brand new Peanuts movie. Did I really hear The Who’s “Baba O’Reilly” as the theme/background music? I mean, ROCK music?!? By a British band?!? Singing about “teenage wasteland” when the characters are in Elementary School?!?!?!? WRONG! WRONG! WRONG! The sound you hear is jazz lover Charles Schulz rolling over in his grave. BLASPHEMY!

Just in time, Concord rushes to the rescue to remind us all what the real sound of Charlie Brown et al is supposed to be. Can you ever get enough reissues of Vince Guaraldi’s trio with Monty Budwig-Fred Marshall/b and Jerry Granelli-Colin Bailey/dr ? Here, you’ve got the classics: “Linus and Lucy,” Chrismastime is Here” (in both instrumental and vocal) and “Baseball Theme” all sound joyful and innocent, just like childhood. Add Tom Harrell/tp for “Thanksgiving Theme” and “Little Birdie” and you’ve got a hip little jazz combo. Ah! As the Peanuts book says,  Happiness is…
