Pianist Manuel Valera forms an impressive trio here with Hans Glawischnig/b and EJ Strickland for a gig in New Haven CT. Valera’s touch on the piano is confident and lyrical, and he needs both qualities as Strickland’s busy drumming underneath could be an intimidating factor with lesser hands. Strickland’s assertive undercurrent give an extra tension on”En Route” and “Century” while his brushes provide supple support on the waltzing “Wayne.” Glawischnig’s bass basteams up well with Valera on “Lirico,” whereas the readings of “Intemezzo Sinfonico” from Mascagni and “Footprints” from Wayne Shorter mix elliptical harmonies with romantic melodies. This is a team of stallions well trained with the bit. A joy for trio fans.
