Duke Ellington & His Orchestra: The Conny Planck Session

If you want your obscure Ellingonia, you’re in for a gem here. Back in 1970, Duke Ellington recorded a pair of tunes for German sound engineer Conny Planck, of which three takes of each is included here. The two songs, “Alerado” and “Afrique” include Wild Bill Davis at the organ on both tunes, features Norris Turney’s flute and a Clark Terry-sounding Cat Anderson on a joyful former, and  Rufus Jones’ rumbling drumming and clever horn sections punctuating the latter. A third take of “Afrique’ includes some haunting and crying wordless vocals by a Cay Davis-inspired singer. The various versions are able to display the thought process of Ellington toying with the orchestra, tweaking it until he got the sound he desired. An enjoyable trip.
