Here’s a vocalist I can guarantee you’re gonna like. Steve Cromity has a rich and alluring low tenor or high baritone voice, and uses it with taste, swing and style on this release. The basic rhythm team of Eric Lemon/b, Darrell Green/dr and Marcus Persiani/p is supportive and deft, while the guests Patience Higgins/ts-ss, Kenyetta Beasley/tp and Eric Wyatt/ts add tasty obliggatos and solos. Cromity sways with aplomb on “Old Devil” while bopping “Jeannine” just right. He shows his soulful strut on “Sugar” and glides like stone on a lake on “When Lights are Low.” Higgins supplies lovely flute work on “My Little Boat” and some earthy tenor is delivered by Wyatt on the glorious “Without A Song.” This guy makes you want to listen to the song; nothing overboard or overly cloying. Rat Pack rich without posing.
