Larry Coryell: Heavy Feel

Legendary guitarist Larry Coryell is caught in an interesting session here. He’s teamed with Matt Montgomery/b, George Brooks/ss and Mike Hughes on a collection of originals. What makes this album so fascinating is that most of the songs clock in around 3-4 minutes. No long solos, just concise themes and enough space for a few statements by the artists. The band can sound like the Average White Band on the funky “Sharing Air” and can get straight ahead rocking on ”Heavy Feel” or tip the Hendrix hat on the bluesy “Polished.” A bit of middle eastern moods is delivered by acoustic guitar on “River Crossing” and Brooks’ soprano lopes on “2011 East” and marches along on “Jailbreak.” Coryell is at his lyrical best and shows a wide swath of colors here. Simultaneously mpressive and unpretentious.
