Bassist Christ Lightcap leads a reed heavy team of Tony Malaby/ts and Chris Clark/ts along with a rhythm secton of Craig Taborn/key and Gerald Cleaver/dr through a collection of originals sans a take of the Velvet Underground’s “All Tomorrow’s Parties.” The punk rock piece, with it with plodding beat, chiming piano and declaratory horns, actually fits in well with other saxy tunes such as the melodic “Nine South” and the fluffy “Stone By Stone.” The band gets a bit rocky as Taborn strides on the piano during “Down East” while his delicate keyboards coalesce with the leader on the delicate “Arthur Avenue.” Cleaver rides the cymbals on the prancing “White Horse” and the band gets a bit free and frisky as Lightcap dons his guitar on “Epicenter.” Fresh in both material and its approach.
