Avishai Cohen Trio: From Darkness

Avishai Cohen leads a rich and flexible trio with Nitai Hershkovitz/p and Daniel Dor/dr though eleven elastic and colorful originals as well as a cozy and intimate reading of Charlie Chaplin’s “Smile” on this latest release. There’s some wonderfully dynamic ebbing and flowing between Cohen and Hershkovitz  on pieces such as “Halelyah” and the somber “Almah Sleeping” which has the leader bowing and picking out his notes. Cohen displays some digital dexterity with rapid finger movement on”Abie” that almost turns the piece into a table dance, getting assertive once again with Dor on “Signature.” A sephardic  dance  has the three forming a circle and clicking their heels on “Lost Tribe” and Dor’s brushes are gracious and gentle on as bass and piano create some delightful glistening sounds on ”Ballad For An Unborn.” To paraphrase from Ecclesiastes, this strand of three chords is not easily broken.
