George Colligan: Risky Notion

Drummer George Colligan composes as well as leads from behind the traps with his band called Theoretical Planets on this collection of post-bop tunes. Colligan creates some intriguing patterns as foundations for the pianoless team of Nicole Glover/ts-ss, Joe Manis/ts-as and Jon Lakey/b to create either winding lines as on “Gorgasaurus” or post bop semi-rockers such as “Space Gives You Time.” The band gets their bluesiest on the hip Phantom Friend” which features Lakey’s resonnt bass, whlethe Night in Tunisia-ish “Con Woman” includes Tony Glausi’s poignant trumpet over Colligan’s incessant groove. Manis’ alto is sweet and sour on the bluesy “Constantly…” and Glover rides the funky backbeat like a long board surfer on “Risky Notion.” Colligan keeps the Richter scale guessing on this one with a plethora of different shifts of the fault lines.
