Any full figured woman over 30 that poses for an album cover in a one piece bathing suit has got to have a lot of either chutzpah or self confidence. Vocalist Robin Banks delivers a soulful collection of self penned tunes that sounds like blue eyed soul (and then some) from the late 60s and early 70s. Her husky tone has a feel and grit of Toni Brown, who used to front Joy of Cooking, and she uses her delivery well with a bluesy band that includes Duke Robillard/g, Bruce Bears/key, Mark Teixeira/dr, Brad hallen/bs, Doug Woolverton/tp and Mark Early/ts-as. Robillard brings some vintage fuzz guitar sounds as well as 70s licks to good vibe tunes such as “Superhero” and “A Man Is Just A Man” while Banks sounds earthy and sassy. A New Orleanish groove on “Crazy” mixes thick horns and a smoky Hammond B3 while Banks swaggers like a bar room bouncer, while she and the band go Stax Soulful on “I’ll Meet You There.” She’s able to bop with the best as well, going as crisp as Romaine lettuce on the richly pulsed “Tonight” and swings with Early’s tenor on the hip “I Really Dig You.” Don’t judge a book by its cover; this lady is for real.
