Phil Markowitz & Zach Brock: Perpetuity

Phil Markowitz/p-key and Zach Brock/vio lead a flexible band of Jay Anderson/ab, Lincoln Goines/eb, Obed Calvaire/dr and Edson Da Silva/perc/voc on a mix of originals that mixes the complexity of jazz-rock fusion with the lightness of acoustic jazz.

You get some real tricky unison lines between piano, violin and vocals on the  title track, with intricate and winding hairpin turns on “Triple Dutch” and assertive bass on the driving “Rongtone”  could have been overwhelming if these gents had plugged in, but in the acoustic atmosphere the nimble lines draw inspiration instead of desperation.Markowitz’s piano broods on the moody “Nebulae” while a film nourish “”Fractures” has Brock rotating from pizzicato to bows to counterbalance the chiming ivories. Elegance is also evident as Calvaire uses his brushes delicately on “Burning Lake” just before he pops out the sticks and creates a New Orleanish celebratory mood on “Ankle Biter.” Dynamic music that mixes sophistication with swing.
