You listen to this music that is 250 years old, and your first thought has to be “what is being played or composed nowadays that people will still be revisiting in 2260? Makes you think a bit.
Pianist Kristian Bezuidernhout has a warm and rich touch as he tackles the gloriously lyrical Piano Sonatas 284 and 310. They are spry, rich, bouncy and elegantly bubbly. His take on the “9 Variations of the Lisbon Dormait” is gracious and flowing, while the “6 Variations on Mio Caro Adone” is filled with regal splendor. Bezuidernout does to Mozart what most jazz artists are supposed to do: serve the music, not themselves. Bezuidernhout does that and more, showing respect to the composer by bringing it out in its best light. Who does that in jazz today?
