Modern tango music was essentially invented by the renowned Astor Piazzolla, and there is a plethora of albums that give tribute to him. This one is in the upper echelon, in that it is lighter on the bandoneon than most, which takes away from the herky-jerkiness of the music and in its place has more harp from Ann Hobson Pilot and violin from Lucia Lin. This is a wise choice even to the point in which there are solos by the strings during the lovingly evocative Chiquillin de Bachin which has some gloriously glowing harp. The two strings duet lovingly on the “Histoire du Tango II; Café 1930” which takes you to another world, while the three joust with lusty assertion on the stomping “ Escualo.”
