Phil Haynes & Free Country: Live-Something Beatles

Here’s an interesting collection of artists performing in a concert setting from 2012. Drummer Phil Haynes brings together a  and of Jim Yanda/g, Hank Roberts/cello-voc and Drew Gress/b for a mix of Americana and Beatlemania. The mix of instrumentation makes you feel like you’re in the Cumberland gap, which fits perfectly for a panoramic “Shenandoah,” with soft vocals by Roberts, but also on the softly gaited “Mother Nature’s Son” with a rich solo by Yanda. There’s some nice dainty  pizzicato with the strings on “Here Comes The Sun” and a hip stop and start on “Birthday” that has Roberts sounding like the B52s Fred Scheider. His lyrical bowed reading of “Hey Jude” and his funky work with Gress on “Revolution” give a rich feeling to it, while the former ends the disc in a folk-jam. Fun gig!
