The quintet Sketches is made up of Matt Holman/tp-fh, Jeremy Udden/as-ss, Jarrett Cherner/p, Martin Nevin/b and Ziv Ravitz/dr and they specialize here in post bop modern sounds. The front line of trumpet and horn is a perennial winner, and it holds well here on the cruising “caught In The Storm” and edgier grooved “Rub.” An accomplished touch on the piano is supplied by Cherner on the dreamy “Sirenia” and the dainty “Wrong Place, Wrong Tim” as well as on the hip “Not Wrong” while Nevin ceates a nice free form case of jousting with Ravitz on “Dyson Ritual.” Never overplaying their hands, the music stays in the pocket and in the tradition quite well.
