Phil Bowler: Phil Bowler & Pocket Jungle

Bassist Phil Bowler leads a band that knows how to create a groove. He teams up with Pete Smith-g, Paul Carlon/ts, Willeam Bausch/dr and Scott Latzky/dr-perc on a collection of material that can snap and sizzle like “Funky Cha” or can bop like it’s Blue Note Records on “West 22nd Street Theme.” Carlon has a beefy tenor sound and knows how to make it sizzle as on a rich “Old Devil Moon” and the deep pocketed “Time In.” You get some fun with tricky times as on the funky “Wights Waits for Weights” while Smith plugs in and rocks out. The whole time, Bowler can create some rivulets that make the wheels stay in for the ride, as on “Old Devil Moon” and “The Set-Up.” It seems so simple, but try it sometime, and you’ll appreciate this disc that much more.
