Nir Naaman: Independence

I’m always on the lookout for solid sax  players who have some muscle in their tone, and this guy Nir Naaman’s a real find. He plays mostly tenor, but can slum it with alto and soprano as well with a versatile and hard hitting team of Ceorge Cables-Roy Assaf/p, Dezron Douglas/b, Gregory Hutchinson-Ulysses Owens Jr/dr and Marcus Printup/tp that mixes and matches quartet and quintet sounds. Of the latter, a bluesy hard bopper such as “Ohali Blues” shows some nice tenor and trumpet work, while the calypso on the title track features some wonderfully dark hues. In the quartet format Cables goes lyrical with Naaman’s soprano on the lovely “”Winter Sun” pops on the ivories while Naaman glows on thealto on “Dilemma” and even goes one better when the two  do a wonderfully sensitive duet with the leader’s tenor going bel canto on ”Polka Dots and Moonbeams.”  Gotta see this guy in concert!
