Joe Clark: The C.O.W.L. Sessions

So, now we’ve got music to accompany comic books. Hey, why not? Joe Clark has written some pretty hip music for it, as well as arranging two takes of “Chicago.” Of the standard, you have a lively vocal version by Raya Yarborough as well as an impressive instrumental take. Speaking of impressive, originals such as “Blaze” and “Investigations” have a hip bluesy Mingus feel with shifting film noir moods. Then, other material like “ The Boss” and “Raith” have muted brass and harmonic tones that evoke images of vintage Gil Evans. Lots of classy grooves and raised collar around the neck moods with the hat tipped over the eyes. Comfort food for fans of late 50s jazz.
