Pianist/keyboardist Greg Spero leads a diverse trio of Makaya McCraven/dr and Junius Paul/b which includes a mix of electronic that feels like an indie movie soundtrack to intriguing acoustic jazz, with even a bit of pop thrown in. Of the latter, a take of “Blackbird” is like a breath of fresh air after the congestion of “Turn it Up” and “Raga” that has layers of 70s fusion keyboards, while the album slowly slides into acoustic themes, such as a harmonically clever read of “Somewhere Over the Rainbow.” Spero actually means “I hope” in Italian, and this album shows some hope for the future of the jazz trio.
