Genesis: Three Sides Live

The band Genesis had gone through a number of changes by the time they performed this series of concerts in 1981. Gone were famed singer Peter Gabriel and guitarist Steve Hackett, as well as the moody progressive rock songs, moods and costumes. Phil Collins, originally the drummer, had now stepped up to be the vocalist, and he does an impressive job mixing the two together here. Weather Report alumnus Chester Thompson handles the traps now, along with Daryl Sturemer/g-b and regulars Tony Banks/key and Mike Rutherford/g-b. The give a tip of the hat to the older incarnation with a three song medley which includes “The Cinema Show and “Slipperman,” but by this time, their albums Duke and Abacab had changed their musical direction. The band performs the cherry picks of these albums, with songs “Man on the Corner,” “No Reply At All” and “Abadab” sounding fresh from the grill, and songs from the earlier album like “Misunderstanding” and “Turn It On Again” mixing well with the mood. There’s also some interviews with the gents,so if you’re a fan of Phil Collins now, and want to see when he was just starting, or want to see what the post-Gabriel band looked like at its apotheosis, here’s an excellent place to start.
