Emma Donovan has an old school R&B grit to her voice that sounds like when was weaned on Stax and Atco records on this collection of originals. The team of Justin Marshall/perc, Simon Mavin/Key, Tom Martin/g, Rory McDougall/dr and Mick Meagher/g deliver funky and sweaty on plodding pieces like “Black Woman” and the slickly soulful “My Goodness.” Some smoky B3 Hammond fills the room on Keep Me In Your Reach” and the slow and steady “Mother” has Donovan’s earthy voice grab you by the throat. Visceral music that gets to your marrow.
