Dennis Angel has a warm sound on his flugelhorn, and mixes it well with a team that focuses on accessible and catchy modern and contemporary jazz. Pianist Kenny Barron joins in on some quintet takes with JT Lewis/dr, James Genus/b and Gottfried Stoger some finger tapping “Soul Strut” and “Sunset Café” while on the other spectrum a funky and electric “Dream Dancer” is sprayed with Afro Sheen and “This Song’s For You” has Angel blowing over a snappiny bass lick supplied by George Porter Jr. . Brazilian guitarist extraordinaire Romero Lubambo teams with Pamela Driggs/voc and warm strings arranged by Jason Miles for a perfect frame for Angel’s horn on “Jubilation.” Upbeat and optimistic without sounding glib, Angel is a true messenger of enjoyable sounds that is both pleasant and powerful
