Paul Pellegrin plays the drums, David Borgo plays the tenor and soprano saxes, and together they lead a larger than small ensemble through a collection of originals that are “dedicated to the exploration of polymetric time.” So, you get five songs that range from just under 6 minutes to just over 20, with times changing faster than a transcontinental flight. Vibist Anthony Smithmakes for a melodious leader as he guide the band through a plethora of directions while Borgo veers through on his soprano sax. Some sharp angles create complex but not undecipherable themes as Paul Garrison’s guitar and Andy Zacharias’ bass arm wrestle with John Fumo’s trumpet on “ Cellar Door.” The lovely “Rhizone” includes some rich classical guitar, angular trumpet, bowed bass and bouncy percussion while the 3 pieced “Entangled” creates layer upon layer that results not in a cataclysm but push to the top of the mountain. Even if you don’t know the difference between a 5/4 rhythm and a Louisiana two step, you’ll find this collection of sophisticated ideas pleasing to the senses of time and space.
