Brian Lynch and Emmet Cohen: Question Answer

By now, I hope you’ve noticed that trumpeter Brian Lynch is putting together a catalogue of releases that is going to go in the books as one of the best of his generation. His one with Eddie Palmieri was a classic, and his pair of Unsung Hero tributes to horn players was jazz comfort food. This one with pianist Emmet Cohen and a sometimes rhythm team of Boris Kozlov/b and BillyHart/dr is a rich mix of lyricism and modern post-bop. Medium tempo cookes like “Cambios” and  the oblique “Distant Hallow” display Lynch’s rich tone and Cohen’s tasty touch, while the 11 minute “Petty Theft” has a glorious panoramic feel, as if you can use this music to accompany the rising of the sun. There are also a handful of duets such as “How Deep Is The Ocean” and ”Just In Time” that are jazz sonatas of beauty.  This guy is the trumpet equivalent of guys like Bill Charlap and Bill Cunliffe-genetically incapable of playing something ugly. Gotta love this guy!
