Culled from the 50 gigs they did in America to promote their last “classic” album, Tattoo You, this dvd captures the last great hurrah of The Rolling Stones at the apotheosis of their days when they were still trying to prove something musically. Here they are filmed at what was then a pay-per-view TV broadcast from Hampton, Virginia. The Stones were still rolling at this stage; Keith Richards still looks alive, Ron Woods is feisty, Wyman’s doing all right, Watts’ is smoking at the drums and good old Mick Jagger is inspired throughout the collection of material. They were in an R&B mood during these days, so you get some nice tributes to the Temptations in “Just My Imagination” and the Miracles in”Going to a Go-Go” which makes sense if you remember that this is how the band started out. Fairly recent material such as “ Shattered,” “Start Me Up” and “Beast of Burden” sound fresh, while even the older tunes like “Tumbling Dice” and “Under My Thumb” feel inspired. As usual, they pull out a couple obscure ringers, and “Time on My Side” as well as “Let It Bleed” turn out to be real crowd pleasers. Fans of this band will eat this one alive.
