Here are a pair of shows recorded back in 2012 with drummer Phil Haynes leading a trio with bassist Drew Gress and sax/flutist Dave Liebman. The tunes all have a fairly loose and improvised on the spot feel, and in the hands of weaker vessels could easily cause a major leak, but these gents make some impressive sounds and effects.
While all of the pieces have a free edge to them, each have their own distinct style and mood. Liebman’s sax bounces on the boppy “Together” and gently rolls on the fluid “Dawn on the Gladys Marrie” along with Gress’ ruminating bass. The team ambles along on “Blues for Israel” and sets up a bluesy groove for Liebman’s tenor on “Last Dance.” A rich and arid flute permeates the bowed bass and some pensive thoughts on “Zen Lieb” and the team goes for spontaneous free flights on ”Encore Du Jour.” On the tightrope without a net for these trapeze artists.
