Though he left us a couple years ago, the famed Bee Gee Robin Gibb had one last album in him, and we’ve got it right here. It’s surprising how impressive and intimate it was-this is the guy who gave us “Jive Talkin’”? Don’t forget he also sung “Massachusetts” and “I Started a Joke,” songs which feel a lot more at home on this well conceived album.
His voice is homey, nostalgic and all throughout and oozes vintage UK sincerity with songs that range from acoustic loves songs (“Anniversary”) to a soft synthesized love note on “Mother of Love.” Some dramatic effects make for “Instant Love” and his fragile voice melts with vulnerability on”Wherever You Go.” A handful of pop songs such as “Sanctuary” have a warm folk feel, while the album closes with majesty on “Al We Have is Now.” Impressive on many levels, and light years away from the polyester disco sounds that helped him afford a well hued career.
