The underrated yet expansive songbook of Johnny Mandel is presented in a variety of moods and styles by vocalist Ginger Berglund and vocalist/trombonist Scott Whitfield. The two mostly go back and forth in the lyrics to songs such as the Brazilian “Cinnamon & Clove” and bopping “I Won’t Believe My Eyes” with jazzy support by the likes of Ken Peplowski/cl and Airto Moreira/perc as guests on Scott Whitfield’s Jazz Orchestra West with Pete Christlieb, Carl Saunders and Steve Huffsteter. Some wonderfully chamber moods with reeds form soft drapery on pieces such as “First” while vocal groups The Modernaires and the Los Angeles Vocal Alliance add some swinging voices on “El Cajon” and “Where Do You Start.” Jazz meets madrigals on some gorgeous vocal treats on “Close Enough For Love” while the band does some Nelson Riddle cooking on “The Shadow of Your Smile.” The rapport between the two on vocals is coy without being overdone; a real cozy time together.
