Andy Milne & Dapp Theory: Forward in All Directions

A little bit of everything is thrown into the mix here, as keyboardist/leader Andy Milne and his team of Aaron Kruziki/reeds, Christopher Trodini/b and Kenny Grohowski/dr meld traditional jazz with modern enticements. Therefore, a hip-hoppish bop on “Photographs” with Kruziki’s soprano fits well with an electric bass groove on “In the Mirror, Darkly.” Some wondrous bass clarinet and piano meld with vocalists Gretchen Parlato, Jean Baylor and John Moon on “Katharsis” while Moon is full and all alone on the looping “search  Party.” Ben Monder brings  in his guitar and stretches out on the exotic “Headache in Residence”  and teams together with Milne’s keyboards and Kruziki’s licorice stick on “How and When Versus What” while piano and soprano go somber on “Fourteen Fingers.” Barriers are broken here, with some nice new frames being built up.
